Did you know over 13.6 million U.S. children under 18 have special health care needs? And 90% of those children are cared for by their families at home with limited caregiver resources.

Primary caregivers need support outlets to prevent fatigue, anxiety, depression, and social isolation. And, prelicensure nursing students need pediatric clinical experience.

Join the NLN on June 8 to learn more about a program at a southeastern university that was developed to provide respite services to local families of children with special needs, and to integrate a hands-on clinical experience for nursing students.

The speakers will present the many benefits of a respite program for children with special needs, including respite time for the primary caregivers, play and interactive time for the children with other children like themselves, and pediatric clinical experience for prelicensure nursing students during a time of extremely limited pediatric clinical experiences.

Siblings of the children with special needs are also encouraged to attend to allow the caregivers the benefit of a true respite experience one night a month for several hours. This also serves to provide the nursing students with play and socialization with children not diagnosed with special needs.

During this webinar, the speakers will:

  1. Review data related to the need for a respite program
  2. Examine student perceptions of participating in a respite program
  3. Identify the benefits of establishing a respite program
