NLN Foundation for Nursing Education Hosts Inaugural Fit for the Future 5K Fundraiser, Kicking Off 2023 Education Summit
Set for September 28 at National Harbor, 5K Registration Now Open Exclusively to Summit Attendees
Washington, DC — When the National League for Nursing convenes the annual NLN Education Summit at National Harbor just outside Washington, DC, this fall, attendees will have the opportunity to enjoy some invigorating outdoor activity while making a valuable contribution to the NLN Foundation for Nursing Education at the first Fit for the Future 5K Fundraiser. This event will kick off the NLN Education Summit on September 28 at 7:00 a.m. as runners and walkers will support the foundation’s mission to raise and provide funding that supports the mission and activities of the National League for Nursing to promote excellence in nursing education.
“The NLN Foundation for Nursing Education depends on the generosity of members, partners and friends whose donations fund a wide variety of programs and educational opportunities. Foremost among them are scholarships and research grants awarded to advanced degree candidates pursuing careers in nursing education as well as scholars whose rigorous original research advances the science of nursing education,” said NLN Foundation Chair Patrick Robinson, PhD, RN, ACRN, CNE, ANEF, FAAN, president of Research College of Nursing in Kansas City, Missouri. “I am excited to lace up my running shoes this fall to race for nursing education!”
“The NLN Foundation’s first in-person 5K fundraiser offers an excellent opportunity to show support for the first nursing organization to offer financial resources for nursing education scholarship. The timing of the 5K run reflects a major objective of the NLN Education Summit, to annually showcase the latest studies of evidence-based best practices in curriculum design, instruction, learning, testing, and assessment to prepare a diverse, culturally sensitive nursing workforce in service of our national and global heath,” said NLN President and CEO Beverly Malone, PhD, RN, FAAN. “I encourage everyone to join me and the National League for Nursing team on the 5K course.”
The NLN Foundation prides itself on supporting multi-year league initiatives. Since 2013, the foundation has raised thousands in matching grant funds to facilitate the NLN Archives Project at the Barbara Bates Center for the Study of the History of Nursing at the University of Pennsylvania, creating a unique repository of historical material now available for scholarly study.
The Foundation also helps underwrite the NLN’s Scholarly Writing Retreat, which is held twice annually. Participants submit research findings and other work to all types of peer-reviewed publications in clinical and education research, including the League’s well-respected scholarly journal, Nursing Education Perspectives. More than 100 publications have accepted submissions since the retreat began 15 years ago.
By providing generous financial support to their scholarly pursuits, the NLN Foundation plays a central role in empowering America’s nurse educators. Foundation scholarships and research grants vary widely in scope and breadth to reach investigators across the spectrum of higher education with a plurality of specialized research interests.
In the past decade alone, the NLN Foundation has provided more than $700,000 to grant and scholarship recipients. Formal recognition of all scholarship and research grant winners is a highlight each year at the NLN Education Summit.
At this time, registration for the 5K is open only to individuals registering for the Summit. Discounted Early Bird Summit registration rates are in effect through May 31.

NLN Foundation Announces Annual Scholarship Awards
Formal Presentation Set for NLN Education Summit in Las Vegas
Washington, DC — Twenty-two scholarships totaling $90,500 are to be awarded for the coming academic year by the National League for Nursing Foundation Scholarship Program. These include 15 winners of the NLN Foundation for Nursing Education faculty scholarships, five undergraduate and advanced nursing students pursuing geriatric nursing, and the winners of two specialized scholarship bequests. The awards presentation will take place during the NLN Education Summit, September 28-30 at the Mirage in Las Vegas.

2022 NLN-Home Instead Scholarship Awards
As one of the most vulnerable populations, older adults require more and more frequent health care services. There is widespread acknowledgement that nursing school graduates must be better prepared to respond to the specialized needs of these individuals and their caregivers in hospitals, clinics, and outpatient settings, like long term acute and residential facilities and in-home care. Since 2018, the NLN Foundation and Home Instead have collaborated to foster and promote geriatric nursing education through a $10,000 scholarship fund. Nursing students enrolled in such courses who have completed at least one year of academic study and have had two years of experience in geriatrics are eligible for an award of up to $5,000.

The NLN Foundation Scholarship Awards Program seeks to support diverse nurses committed to careers in academic nursing education. Hence, awards of up to $8,000 are made to nurses enrolled in accredited master’s or doctoral programs and have completed at least one year of advanced academic study toward their degrees.

Edmund J.Y. Pajarillo Health Informatics and Innovation Scholarship Award
With a focus on informatics and innovation in the use of data analysis and health information technology, the Edmund J.Y. Pajarillo scholarship opens a new avenue of scholarship to support the National League for Nursing and its members. Multiple real-world applications of these research studies are urgently needed. A scholarship of up to $2,500 is offered annually to support an applicant enrolled in an accredited graduate-level program in this growing field of nursing education.

Cecelia Lou Vriheas Scholarship Award
The Cecelia Lou Scholarship is a single $8,000 scholarship awarded to nurses pursuing advanced degrees to establish their career as full-time nurse educators who are the first in their family to pursue higher education and belong to an historically marginalized/excluded group, including but not limited to Black, Indigenous, Native American, Pacific Islander, immigrant populations, and those from rural areas.
